I attended a PCMA webinar on April 20th called “7 Actionable
Conference Design Insights from TED Events”.
This was my first experience attending a webinar or any other type of
professional virtual conference and I enjoyed it because I was able to do it
from the comfort of my home, however, it did create a degree of separation
between the speaker and audience.
They required that I register prior to the start of the webinar
so I did so and was easily able to access the link when the webinar
started. I enjoyed the chat component
that was offered. Instead of just having
the speaker speak to us, we were also able to type messages into a chat box
where we could say where we are from as well as ask any questions we may
have. This allowed for the event to be
interactive and even motivated people to ask questions via chat that they may
not have asked in person at a large speaking event. During the webinar we were able to watch the
speaker as well as follow along on a video PowerPoint that she was controlling
as she spoke. To make it convenient to
the attendees, she also created a handout that we could download that had all
the contents of the PowerPoint so we did not have to write notes and we could
instead listen and interact with each other.
This was also interesting to me because I am a very big fan of
TED Events and allowed me to think about what actually makes these TED events
as successful as they are.. The most important information I got out of the
webinar was the emphasis on how the speakers and components of TED events are
very curated, and this is what leads them to continued success. Similar to TED
events, the webinar was very organized and easy to follow. After attending this webinar I will
definitely register for other webinars because it is a great way to learn
something new in an easy, convenient manner.
