#1: The Benefits of Joining Meeting and Convention Associations
As a non-event management student, I was unaware of the associations, and the benefits they could offer. The panels from several associations made me understand how they could help me in my future career development. All of the panels were very informative, and the panelists were all about helping students to succeed, as the event and meeting industry is not very big. The student membership rate for the associations are very low, and the membership gives students access to various events the associations hold throughout the year. Students can easily find mentors and contacts via the members in the associations. More importantly, these panels gave me the chance to understand both sides of the industry - the event planner side and the venue side.
#2: Event Technology
The most frequent catchphrase in class and from the site visits was social media. Social media has transcend the way people communicate and get information, and it certainly has made significant impact on the events. Moreover, companies like Social Tables are providing the ultimate solution to event and site planning, visualizing the experience and making people lives easier. What shock me the most was the Cvent presentation. VR technology, drone, etc. are some of the buzz words today, and they seem far away from us. However, there are events that have adopted these technologies. Catching the wave is definitely important to the event planners.
#3: Attention to Details
In our class, we went through several case analyses. The experience once again reinforced the importance of details. These cases were very carefully selected and complemented our class material very well. I've always been a fan of case study since the cases gave me better perspectives of how we can apply what we have learnt in the classroom into real life. By answering the questions posted on blackboard, I read into the lines and understood the materials better. Moreover, the cases provoked my thoughts on the creative side of event meeting, which made the whole process very fun.
